Green Taxonomy is a European classification system for economic activities that are beneficial to the environment. Its aim is to encourage businesses to invest in those directions. This taxonomy, mobilised some time ago to build a sustainable Europe, is now being used by Teréga as a tool to accelerate the energy transition.
Introduced in 2020, it enables more than 11,000 businesses to establish a standardised classification of their activities in response to defined criteria in an annual report.
Green taxonomy is currently based on 6 environmental targets (which must feature in the reports from the businesses in question):
Climate change mitigation;
Climate change adaptation;
Sustainable use & protection of water & marine resources;
Transition to a circular economy;
Pollution prevention and control;
Protection & restoration of biodiversity & ecosystems.
For an activity to be recognised as eligible under the taxonomy it must meet 3 main criteria, which are:
Inclusion in the list of eligible activities;
Meeting the technical criteria and guarantees set out in the European Union’s regulations;
Not compromising the other 5 environmental objectives, in accordance with the principle of “Do No Significant Harm” (DNSH).
Since 2021, green taxonomy has been supplemented by a new classification that includes gas and nuclear.
