What is a syngas?

Syngas, or synthesis gas, is gas from non-fossil sources, produced through pyro-gasification.

Pyro-gasification is a thermochemical transformation process which consists in heating carbon-rich matter to obtain a synthesis gas. That syngas is composed of hydrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Following purification, it can be injected into networks in the form of synthetic methane, and can be put to the same uses as natural gas (to produce heat or electricity, or as a fuel).

Syngas is seen as a renewable energy if its production is part of a circular economy approach, where waste from the territory is used as the input into the pyro-gasification process.
